CINDY WEIL - Artist, Designer and Founder of I80West, the Wallpaper Collective and the Immigrant Yarn Project.
My work is characterized by a keen interest in the materiality and history of wool and its ability to express the female condition and restraint.
The process of turning raw wool into a solid form is chaotic, unpredictable, and intimately linked to my work. Change is hard, and transformation is humbling. Sometimes just letting go can lead to profound places. In this spirit, I’m always trying to cultivate a cool loneliness, a state of serene solitude and relinquishment, that I can communicate through the work.
Since early 2026 I have been reinterpreting these same concepts in oil on canvas paintings. I am currently working on a collection call Prairie Madness. This is a historical term for the anxiety, agitation and psychosis experienced by some settlers on the Great Plains in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Working from my studio in Nebraska, I find this idea resonant in its central contradiction: the prairie can feel both limitless and confining. The enormous sky suggests freedom, yet the lack of shelter or boundaries can make a person feel exposed, unmoored or swallowed by space.
